Proposed Bus Stop Redesign

ABOUT
This was a conceptual proposal to the Brisbane City Council on a new user-friendly bus stop information sign using Smart City urban infrastructure including sensors and real digital data analytics.

WHY
Brisbane bus stops are falling short in terms of accessible information, making bus journeys less efficient for many commuters. Daily bus users often express frustration with overcrowded buses and the lack of real-time updates on alternative routes or services. It’s common to see some buses completely full while others are nearly empty, which highlights poor capacity management and transparent information to users. Additionally, unreliable schedules and buses not arriving on time add to the overall inefficiency of the system.

HOW
Outdoor LCD screens will display real-time information, such as arrival status and current bus capacity. Color-coded indicators offer a quick visual reference—if a bus is full, the bus number will appear in red, while a bus with available seats will be marked in green. This system helps passengers quickly identify other bus options without assuming the first bus is their only choice. Additionally, a bottom screen will display detailed maps of the stops and cycle through information for each bus currently there, giving users clear visual information about where each bus is heading, making it easier to explore alternative routes to the same destination. These features are part of a broader Smart City initiative to improve public transportation efficiency.
